In 1980, Arthur McDuffie, an African American community worker was brutally kicked, beaten and clubbed to death by Miami police. His murder mobilized protests in two black neighborhoods troubled by economic underdevelopment, high unemployment and incidents of police brutality. After the police officers were acquitted of all charges in the killing, the enraged community erupted as the entire nation watched via television.
